RIcoh402vsLexmark511We're  going beyond the spec sheets to find product differences that truly stand out; breaking down performance so you can find the very best machine for your organization. First up, B/W MFP's: the Ricoh 402SPF and the Lexmark MX511. Both great machines on paper, but who stack up the best?

Our competition has three components: 1) Usability 2) Productivity 3) Image Quality

Usability

People are a company’s most expensive asset. When they spend extra time trying to program a job or clear a jam, that’s wasted money. These are some of the usability items we look for during our analysis. The results are in:

Document Feeders

The document feeder on the MX511 is well built but only comes standard with a DADF. That means it takes two passes to duplex scan. The SPDF on the MP 402SPF is better than the Lexmark at simplex / duplex monochrome scanning and much faster with color scanning. Standard embedded OCR on the MP 402SPF is a nice feature. The scanner lid on the MP 402SPF allows for easy book copying and the document feeder can handle thicker paper, 128 gm2 vs. 75 gm2 on the Lexmark. The MP 402SPF is more capable and productive than the Lexmark MX511.

Operation Panels

The operation panel is the customer’s primary method of interacting with a device. As devices become more capable, it is important that technology remains intuitive and not intimidating. The Lexmark, although simple and user friendly, leaves a lot to be desired from a technology perspective. The larger size of the Ricoh makes things much easier to see and more interactive. The Ricoh with its new UI, along with the Application Site and the many apps and widgets make the MP 402SPF SOP a clear winner over the Lexmark MX511.

Engine, Mainframe, Jam Clearance

While both engines feature jam clearance instructions and illustrations. Comprehensive alert illustrations give clear instructions for resolving issues. A standard 320GB hdd and the ability to connect to 2 different networks simultaneously, make these devices very capable. This one's a draw.

Consumables

The MP 402SPF has a better toner yield (10.4k) vs. the standard/high yield MX511 toners (2.5k/10k). The drum yield on the Lexmark is  higher (60k) vs. (40k) on the MP 402SPF though.  Both toners are loaded from the front and the MP 402SPF requires 6 steps vs. 4 for the MX511, making the Lexmark slightly easier to change out.  This round goes to the Lexmark!

Mobile Support

Mobile phones and tablets are common at home and the workplace, and the Ricoh is the clear winner in this category.  Both devices offer mobile solution capabilities but the MP 402SPF’s SDC easily outperforms the Lexmark app. The ability to connect to an MFP, projector or whiteboard all using the same app makes Smart Device Connector a powerful communication tool. Having control over more device functions and more connection methods give the customer greater flexibility when using Smart Device Connector app.

Productivity

The MP 402SPF delivered fast simplex scanning speeds in black and white at 42 ipm. The Lexmark ran a bit slower at just 34 ipm, a difference of 8. Color scan speeds showed even bigger advantages for the MP 402SPF. At 42 ipm it dominated the Lexmark which only reached 15 ipm, a difference of 27 ipm. Duplex scanning was an even more dominant area during our testing. At 83 ipm the MP 402SPF was more than 4 times faster than the Lexmark (19 b&w and 9 color). Probably because the document feeder on the Lexmark is a dual pass and the MP 402SPF has an single pass. The MP 402SPF was very consistent when scanning. Speeds were consistent when compared to ipm speeds quoted on brochure/ spec sheet. The Lexmark MX511 however posted lesser ipm speeds than we expected. Our dpi settings (300) caused the Lexmark to perform at a slower rate. The faster specs printed on the Lexmark brochures are based off of settings and selections different from the ones we use during testing. The CAT Lab suggests that scans should be saved at 300 dpi or higher to ensure document readability and quality. The MP 402SPF also showed advantages when it came to scan file sizes. Ricoh wins again!

ImageQuality

ImageQ1

ImageQ2

The MP 402SPF provided excellent results when copying various originals. Fonts and lines looked good and copied images were merely identical to the original. The Lexmark MX511 copies were over saturated and fonts showed visible knockouts.

Ricoh outperforms the Lexmark MX511 in image quality.

THE RESULTS ARE IN:

Winning 5/7 rounds, including one draw, the RICOH MP 402SPF is the clear winner. Most notable advantages the Ricoh has when compared to the Lexmark is the additional mobile capabilites, as well as an outright shoutout in the production categories - that's in large part to that amazing single pass document feeder scanning two pages at once.
